테드 제닝스 : 내가 만난 동성애자인권연대

내가 처음 한국 LGBT 운동과 인연을 맺게 된 것은 2001년 감신대 초청으로 교회와 사회가 동성애자들을 완전히 인정하고 받아들여야 한다는 입장의 지지자로서 동성애와 기독 신앙에 대한 토론회에 참여했을 때였다. 당시 나는 이미 오랫동안 미국에서 교회 내 동성애자들을 지지하는 활동을 해 왔던 터였다. 1991년 내가 성서 조직 신학 교수로 있는 시카고 신학대학은 전세계 기독대학 중 최초로 동성애자 연구 프로그램을 시작했다. 

2001년부터 한국을 방문할 기회가 많았고 그 때마다 나는 한국 동성애자 활동가들의 창조적이고 용감한 활동에 깊은 감명을 받았다. 나아가 나는 동성애자인권연대가 나에게 베푼 친절과 여러 가지로 동인련 활동가들과 함께 할 기회를 가졌던 것을 감사하게 생각한다.

동인련은 몇몇 모습에서 내게 깊은 인상을 남겼다. 첫째는 회원들이 서로에게 진심 어린 관심과 존중을 보인다는 점이다. 이것은 내가 알고 있는 미국이나 다른 나라의 운동 단체들에서 흔치 않은 모습이다. 신뢰와 우정, 애정과 상호 존중은 변화를 일구는 사람이 되고자 하는 모든 이들에게 매우 귀중하고도 절대적으로 중요한 가치다. 우리가 바라는 변화, 예를 들면 더 정의롭고 관대하고 친절한 사회의 본보기가 되는 것이 중요하기 때문이다.

그러나 끈끈한 우정으로 똘똘 뭉쳐 있는데도 동인련은 절대 폐쇄적인 모임이 되진 않을 것 같다. 오히려 끊임없이 새로운 사람들에게 다가가려 하면서, LGBT들에게 더 공정한 사회로의 변화를 위한 활동에서 책임감 있는 동등한 참가자가 되도록 노력한다.

내가 감명 받은 동인련 활동의 또 다른 특징은 언제나 사회에서 배척당하고 주변으로 밀려난 모든 사람들과 연대하려고 노력한다는 점이다. 미국에서는 동성애자 권리 활동을 하는 단체들이 자신들의 투쟁, 고통, 의제에만 초점을 맞추는 일이 아주 흔하다. 이런 단체들은 내향적이 되고 심지어는 변화를 위한 다른 운동들에 적대적이게 되기도 한다. 한국의 동성애자인권연대는 그렇지 않다. 동인련의 일관된 정책은 더 정의로운 사회, 세상이 밀어낸 모든 사람들을 포용하는 사회, 진정으로 민주적인 사회를 위해 투쟁하는 모든 사람들과 언제나 연대한다는 것이다.   

 이렇게 멋진 동인련 사람들의 삶의 일부가 될 수 있다는 것은 내 인생에서 예상치 못한 커다란 즐거움이다. 그들이 낯선 나를 안에 들이고 기꺼이 자신들의 삶과 활동의 일부로서 받아들인 것은 내가 평생 감사히 여길 귀중한 선물이다. 다음번에 한국에 가면 낯익은 얼굴들 뿐 아니라 새로운 얼굴들을 더 많이 만날 수 있길 바란다. 그래서 우리가 함께 세상을 더 정의롭고 모든 이들에게 너그러운 사회로 만드는 활동을 계속해 나가게 되길 바란다.

LGBT Pride Korea

I first became acquainted with the LGBT  rights movement in Korea in 2001 when I was asked to participate on a panel at Kamshim on Homosexuality and Christian Faith as an advocate for the full inclusion of gay and lesbian people in Church and Society.  At that time I had already been engaged for many years in advocacy for gay and lesbian people within the churches in the United States.  In 1991 we had initiated the first gay studies program in a Christian Seminary anywhere in the world at the Chicago Theological Seminary where I serve as Professor of Biblical and Constructive theology.

Since 2001 there have been many opportunities to visit Korea and each time I have been deeply impressed by the creative and courageous work of Korean Gay andLesbian activists.  I am also deeply grateful for the hospitality that LGBT Pride has extended to me and for the opportunity of working with the leadership of this group in many ways.

There are several things about this organization that deeply impress me.  The first is that those who are involved demonstrate a deep care and respect for one another. This is not common among advocacy groups that I have known in the US and elsewhere. The level of trust and friendship, of affection and mutual respect is something that is very precious and is crucial for any who seek to be agents of change. For it is important to embody the change we hope for: a more just and generous and kind society.

Despite the bonds of friendship that hold this group together it never seems to become an exclusive club.  Instead there is constant outreach to new people, inviting them to become full and equal participants in the work of transforming society toward more justice for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered persons.

A further dimension of this group’s work that deeply impresses me is its commitment to always be in solidarity with all who are excluded or marginalized in society.  Very often in the US groups that work for gay rights focus only on their own struggle, their own pain, their own agenda.  These groups become inward looking and even hostile to other movements for change.  Not so with LGBT Pride in Korea,  The consistent policy of this group is to always be in solidarity with all who struggle for a more just society, for the inclusion of all who are made to be outsiders, for a more genuinely democratic society. 

It is one of the great unexpected joys of my life to be able to be a part of the life of this wonderful group of people.  That they have taken me in, even though a stranger, and welcomed me as a part of their life and mission is a great gift for which I will always be grateful.    I hope when I return to Korea it will be possible to meet many more members of this movement both old and new.  And that together we may continue the work of making both of our societies more just and generous to all.
