by 행성인 2009. 12. 30.

During my time in South Korea, one of my favorite experiences was working with Solidarity. We did a lot of interesting and meaningful activities, including raising awareness about HIV/AIDS, a workshop, and meeting with LGBT activists from around the world. If I had not connected with Solidarity during my time in Korea, I would not have been able to experience any of these things.

Working with Solidarity to promote HIV/AIDS awareness was one of my favorite activities. We approached passersby and asked them what they knew about HIV/AIDS through a fun game. HIV/AIDS is such an important issue for everybody to know about, so I thought it was really great that Solidarity did the outreach in a public place. One of the most beneficial things about this is that it helps to fight the stereotype that HIV/AIDS only affects the LGBT community. In reality, it affects all sorts of people. Encouraging people outside of the LGBT community to learn about HIV/AIDS helps to raise awareness and change people's thoughts about it.

The workshop was also incredibly fun. We went to Yangpeyong, and although it was very cold, we had a great time. Though the conversations were often difficult for me to understand, I think that it is incredibly important for activist groups to take time to look back on the successes and failures of the past year as well as to plan for the future. Taking this time for reflection allows the group to be more effective in the future, and it also allows group members to get closer to each other. Additionally, going to a different place makes it possible for the group to do all of these things while also having a fun time. One thing that is really important for activist groups to remember is how to relax and have fun, as activism can be stressful or depressing.

Another really enjoyable experience was getting to meet Danilo, who works for a feminist organization in Mexico City. By meeting with Danilo, another Solidarity member and I were able to learn about the LGBT rights movement in Mexico and parts of Latin America as well as his work with a feminist organization. Additionally, we were able to share with him information about the LGBT rights movement in Korea. There were a lot of interesting differences, such as the movement in Mexico does not use the Internet as much as the one in Korea. There were also similarities, such as the fact that younger people are becoming very involved in the rights movement. Danilo also suggested contacts with other LGBT organizations in Asia that he had met at international conferences.

I feel that Solidarity is like a family. After every event, the members gather and go to a restaurant and eat together. The members also care for one another and spend time together outside of the Solidarity events. I really enjoyed getting to be a part of Solidarity these past few months, and I will continue to keep in touch with Solidarity. The friends that I have made in Solidarity are friends that I will remember for the rest of my life.
