Adam and Steve : 아담과 스티브

 

게이와 레즈비언을 소외시키고 심지어 범죄 집단으로 몰아세우기 위해 수세기 동안 악용되어 온 특정 성경 구절들이 있다. 기원 후 400년, 일부 기독교 지식인들은 동성애를 비난하고자 필로가 발명한 소돔 이야기의 해석을 채택했다. (비록 성경과 다른 유대교 구절들에서는 그 이야기를 부유한자와 오만한자들의 범죄에 대한 언급이라고 해석했을지라도 말이다.) 200년 후, 로마서 1장 26~27절에 있는 바울의 말은 동성애에 반대하는 법을 정당화하기 위해 황제들에 의해 처음 사용되었다. 16세기에 이르러서야 레위기를 인용해 동성애를 반대하기 시작했다. 기독교인들은 레위기의 다른 구절들을 기독교인들을 위한 규율(일례로, 음식이나 의복에 관한 규율)로 사용한 적이 단 한반도 없었으므로 이것은 이상한 결정이었다.

 

분명히 매우 사소하고 시시한 구절들이 동성애자들과 동성애 행위들에 대한 반감을 정당화하기 위해 발견되어왔다. 그러다가 20세기에 와서 처음으로 일부 기독교인들이 그들의 적대감과 동성애혐오를 정당화하기 위해 창세기의 창조신화를 언급하기 시작했다. 그들은 신이 아담과 스티브, 혹은 이브와 사라가 아니라 아담과 이브를 창조했다고 말했다. 따라서 그들은 신이 동성애자를 창조하지 않았다고 판단해버렸다.

 

이러한 주장은 놀랄 만큼 정말 어리석은 것이다. 그 창조신화는 우리 자신이 발견한 세상의 경이로운 다양성이 관대한 조물주의 사랑스러운 작품에서 비롯된다는 사실을 확신시켜 준다. 더불어 그것은 전 인류가 서로 다를 지라도 동일한 가족의 구성원으로서 서로 연관되어 있다는 사실을 알려준다. 우리 모두가 하나라고 주장하기 위해서는, 인류의 섹슈얼리티를 신이 축복해주며 그 안에서 우리가 스스로를 발견한다고 말할 수 있어야만 한다. 창조의 태초부터 동성애자들이 없었다고 말하는 것은 한국인은 물론, 필리핀인도 없으며 노르웨이인도 없고 나이지리아인도 없다고 말하는 것과 같다. 왜냐하면 단 하나의 커플이 지구상의 수많은 부족들과 가족들의 모든 다양한 특징들을 다 가질 수는 없기 때문이다. 물론 요점은 모든 사람들, 즉 키가 크거나 작고, 뚱뚱하거나 마르고, 갈색이거나 핑크색, 검은색이거나 하얀색인 사람들은 모두 다가 인류의 다양성을 반기는 신이 만든 똑같이 훌륭한 창조물이라는 것이다. 그 신은 자신의 위대한 사랑으로 모든 사람들을 포용하기 위해 오늘날에까지 이르고 있는 것이다. 게이와 레즈비언들은 어머니와 아버지에 의한 재생산이라는, 다른 모든 사람들과 같은 방식으로 존재할 수 있었다. 그리고 그들 또한 신이 우리에게 그렇게 생명을 부여해왔다는 사실을 이성애자들과 마찬가지로 기뻐한다. 모든 생명은 인류의 욕망과 기쁨을 통해 전달된 신의 값진 선물이기 때문이다.

 

그러나 그들은 말한다. 게이와 레즈비언들은 다른 인류를 생산하지 못한다고. 물론 우리는 많은 게이와 레즈비언들이 그들의 삶에서 일정부분 반대 성별의 사람들과 관계를 맺으면서 살아왔다는 것을 잘 알고 있다. 따라서 우리는 게이 아버지와 레즈비언 어머니가 있다는 사실을 잘 안다. 그리고 많은 레즈비언뿐만 아니라 게이 커플들도 아이들을 입양한다. 그들은 아이들이 “이성애자”인 친부모들에게 버림받았을 때조차 사랑이 넘치는 집을 그 아이들에게 제공한다. 물론 아이를 기르지 않는 게이와 레즈비언들도 있다. 그렇다고 그 사실이 오늘날 비극적인 일은 아니다. 왜냐하면 이미 지구상에는 너무 많은 인류가 존재하고 있기 때문이다. 출산율의 증가는 인류에게 더 이상 긴급한 요구사항이 아니다. 오히려 그 반대라고 하는 편이 맞다. 아마도 작금의 신은 자신이 만든 멋진 행성에 넘쳐나는 인구를 줄일 수 있도록 동성애자가 되라고 더욱 요구할 지도 모르겠다. 아마도 우리는 아기를 더 많이 가지라는 요구를 하지 않는 오늘날의 많은 사람들, 그리고 사랑을 찾고 표현하기 위해 여전히 자신들의 섹슈얼리티를 이용하는 사람들이 있다는 것을 감사해야 할지도 모른다. 왜냐하면 이것이야말로 섹슈얼리티라는 선물이 지닌, 출산을 넘어선 진정한 의미이자 목적이기 때문이다.

 

창세기의 의미는 신이 6번째 날 이후에 영구적인 휴식을 취했다는 것이 아니라, 오히려 신이 모든 창조물들, 모든 존재들을 선의로 공표했다는 것이다. 인종차별주의로 다른 인종의 선량함을 부정하도록 이끄는 사람들이 있다. 성별의 한쪽이 지닌 온전한 선량함을 부정하는 성차별주의자들이 있다. 그리고 일부 형제자매들의 선량함을 부정하는 동성애혐오적인 사람들이 있다. 그러나 그들은 자신들의 공포와 증오를 정당화하기 위해 창조신화를 지지한다는 주장을 할 수는 없다. 관대한 마음으로 모두에게 생명을 부여한 신은 사랑을 이런 식으로 제한 두지 않는다. 차이를 사랑하고 다양한 생명체를 창조한 신은 인간의 삶과 사랑의 다양성을 축복하라고 우리에게 요청한다. 왜냐하면 신은 창조를 끝낸 것이 아니라 모든 생명체와 모든 인류를 정의와 사랑이 머무는, 그리고 모든 공포와 증오가 사라진 새로운 창조 속으로 인도하고자 애쓰고 있기 때문이다.

There are certain biblical texts that have been used for centuries to marginalize, even to criminalize gay and lesbian people. 400 years after Jesus some Christian intellectuals adopted the interpretation of the story of Sodom invented by Philo that used the story to condemn same sex love (although biblical and other Jewish texts interpreted the story to refer to the crimes of the wealthy and arrogance). Two hundred years later the words of Paul in Romans in 1:26-27 were first used by emperors to justify laws against same sex love. Only in the 16thcentury did it occur to opponents of same sex love to make use of Leviticus. This was an odd decision since obviously Christians had no intention of using other parts of Leviticus (about food and clothing for example) as a rule for Christians.

 

Obviously only tiny and unimportant texts had been found to support the antipathy to homosexual people and practices. But then in the 20thcentury some for the first time began to refer to the creation accounts in Genesis to support their animosity, their homophobia. God created Adam and Eve they said, not Adam and Steve, or Eve and Sara. Thus they reason that same sex people could not have been created by God.

 

This argument is remarkable for its manifest stupidity. The creation accounts are written to assure us that the marvelous diversity of the world in which we find ourselves all comes from the loving work of a generous creator. Moreover it tells us that all human beings are related to one another as members of the same family whatever the differences among them. For the story to be able to tell us that we are all one it must also tell us that human sexuality is blessed by God and is (among other things) the means for the further creation of the diverse human world in which we find ourselves. To say that there were no gay people in that created beginning amounts also to saying that there were also no Korean people, no Philippino people, no Norwegians or Nigerians. For one single couple could not have all the diverse characteristics of the many tribes and families of peoples on earth. Of course the point is that all people: tall and short, round and slim, brown and pink and black and white are all part of the same wonderful creation of a God who delights in human diversity; the same God who reaches out today to embrace all people in the wonderful love of God. Gay and lesbian people come into existence the same way as all other people, through the reproduction of mother and father and like heterosexual people are glad that God has given us life in this way. For all life is a precious gift of God transmitted through human desire and delight in one another.

 

But they say: gay and lesbian people don’t reproduce other human beings. Of course we all know that many gay and lesbian people have at some point in their lives been in relations with persons of the opposite sex. That is why we know that there are gay fathers and lesbian mothers. And there are many lesbian and even gay male couples who adopt children to give them a loving home even when the children had been abandoned by their own “heterosexual” parents. Of course there are other gay and lesbian people who do not have children. But this is not a tragedy today. For there are more than enough human beings on earth already: procreating more is not an urgent necessity for the human race. In fact the opposite may be true. Perhaps today God is calling many more to be same sex lovers in order to reduce the overcrowding of his wonderful planet. Perhaps we should all be grateful that there are many people today who do not feel called upon to make more babies, people who still employ their sexuality to find and express love; for this far more than procreation is the true meaning and goal of the gift of sexuality.

 

The meaning of Genesis is not that God went on permanent vacation after the 6thday but rather that God has declared all creatures, all created beings, to be good. There are those whose racism leads them to deny the goodness of other races; there are sexists who deny the full goodness of one of the sexes. And there are homophobic people who deny the goodness of some of their sisters and brothers. But they cannot claim the support of the creation story to support their fear and hatred. The God who so generously gives life to all does not limit love in this way. The God who loves diversity and so creates a diverse creation calls us to celebrate the diversity of human life and love. For God has not finished with creation but seeks to lead all creatures, and all humanity, into that new creation where justice and love will dwell, and all fear and hatred will be abolished.
